COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WTVR) – An unidentified jet spotted over Colonial Heights Wednesday night has folk buzzing.

In fact, several people dialed 911 after they heard the noise, which some folks said rattled their homes.

"There was a plane flying awful close, on our neighborhood," one caller said. "Yeah, we just heard it fly over. Oh my God, I thought the dag-gone thing was going to crash into my house."

A camera outside the fire station captured the blinking light in the sky just before 9:30 p.m. around the same time Colonial Heights residents started wondering what was happening.

"I look out and there's a huge plane, and it's real low to the ground and I saw a red light and a green light. And it really kind of scared me," Margaret Smith said.

Some said what they believe the plane was a military aircraft that sounded like it was running full throttle, but moving very slowly. So much so that they feared the jet was in trouble.

"This was really loud,” Tom Gates said. “It was like a plane on top of the trees… really loud for five to eight seconds -- not like a normal plane."

In fact, Catherine Whitney said the noise was so intense that it frightened her children.

"It was loud enough that it shook the windows in our house. It felt like I went out and checked it, and both the girls woke up crying," Whitney said.

Mike Wessel said the noise was so extreme that it shook his house.

“It shook us too enough to get up and go look and find out to make sure it wasn't going to land, fall somewhere,” he said.

Officials at the Richmond International Airport said there were no planes in trouble – or any incidents reported Wednesday night.
