RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The emailed press release arrived in our in-box at 8:47 Wednesday morning. “Wegmans Confirms Plans to Build Two Stores Near Richmond, VA,” it announced.
After a phone call confirmed the email was in fact from the upstate New York-based grocery chain, news of Wegmans’ plans was posted on WTVR.com and social media. It did not take long for it to spread throughout the community.
“You have no idea how excited this makes me!! Yahoo @Wegmans! #ImissUkrops#weneedWegmans,” Susan Stynes tweeted in response to the announcement.
“Y’all won’t be disappointed, this place kick’s some serious butt when it comes to prices on meats, and the beer selection is just awesome,” Timothy Breeden commented on the WTVR CBS 6 News Facebook page.
“If you thought Ukrop’s was good, wait till you see this store. It’s like Ukrop’s was….but better!” Sheryl Courter Marencik chimed in.
Why are people so excited? Consumer Reports recently ranked Wegmans as the number one supermarket in America. Trader Joe’s, also located in Short Pump, ranked number two.
The closest Wegmans to Central Virginia is located in Fredericksburg.
“This store is awesome. I drive to Fredricksburg just to get a slice of pizza! Can we say addiction? And the bakery, the wine and cheese section AMAZING!” Vernice Taylor wrote on Facebook.
