Firefighters continue to dig through the debris for bodies and survivors after a gas explosion leveled two buildings on Park Avenue in New York City.
A second person has died as a result of the building collapse in
Manhattan, a New York Police Department officer told CNN. Both of the
dead are female, according to the officer; their names have not been

and collapse in Manhattan have told investigators that they could smell
gas before the explosion, law enforcement sources told CNN’s Shimon

(CNN) — “1644 Park Avenue appears not to be there anymore,” a NYPD
detective told CNN’s Poppy Harlow on Wednesday morning regarding the
blast and collapse of a building in Manhattan. The building was a
five-story building with residences.
Law enforcement officials tell CNN they are not seeing any terror
connection in the Manhattan explosion. The leading indication is that
this was a gas explosion, the sources said.
Clouds of dark smoke could be seen for a three-block radius as hundreds of rescue officials descended on the scene.
Metro North commuter rail service, which runs along the site of the blast on Park Avenue, was suspended, officials said.
There were at least 11 minor injuries as clouds of dark smoke rose over
the residential neighborhood of red-brick tenements, fire officials
