HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A suspicious note found on a high school bus parked outside Cold Harbor Elementary in Mechanicsville prompted an early-morning lock down at the school, according to someone at the school’s main office.
“At approximately 7 a.m., the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office responded to Cold Harbor Elementary School in Mechanicsville for a report of a note that was posted to a school bus, which contained a general threat to all Hanover County Public Schools for March 7, 2014,” Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Chris Whitley wrote in an email.
The lock down occurred before the beginning of the school day.
“As a result, no students nor their parents were allowed inside of the school until a thorough security sweep could be completed by Sheriff’s Office personnel,” Whitley said. “Upon completion, it was determined that no apparent threat existed, and student, parents, and faculty were allowed inside of the school. The school is no longer on lock down and classes have resumed normally.”
Whitley said deputies and investigators remain on the scene and “explosive detecting K-9s” will be used “out of an abundance of caution.”
“The Sheriff’s Office will remain at each Hanover County Public School’s campus throughout the remainder of the day in order to reassure students, faculty, and parents,” Whitley wrote.
Cold Harbor Elementary School is located along the 6700 block of Cold Harbor Road.
