VIRGINIA BEACH,  Va. (WTVR) – Thousands of dollars have been donated to the public fund set up by a Virginia Beach lawyer to help pay former governor Bob McDonnell’s legal fees.

McDonnell and his wife Maureen were indicted for accepting thousands of dollars in gifts from a wealthy political donor.

The “Restoration Fund,” which was created in July by a man who said he is not affiliated with the governor, has raised $11,554, according to the Virginian Pilot.

The newspaper reports the largest donations came from the chairman of the project, Virginia Beach lawyer Stanley Baldwin, and the retired co-found of Dollar Tree, J. Douglas Perry of Norfolk.

The McDonnells are scheduled to go on trial July.

The State paid 800,000 legal fees and now the Governor is looking for help to cover his Federal charge. Governor and other lawmakers accept thousands in gifts for favors as it was legal in the State. But it is a violation of federal law.

If his pack of lawyers are so certain he is innocent, and given the widespread FREE publicity this atrocity has attracted, his lawyers should do this one on the house, and the donors could put the $11,000+ into a fund to pay the tax payers back for the tens, and tens of thousands we already spent defending this self-centered mooch.
