PHILADELPHIA (WTVR) -- A pregnant Pennsylvania woman unable to make it to her car because of treacherous winter weather ended up giving birth on a sled outside her home.

Fabian Bonanni said it was too slick Wednesday for his wife to walk to the car. Accordingly, he decided to use the family’s sled to tow her to the vehicle.

However, her contractions came on so quickly and were so strong, that Bonanni had to immediately deliver the baby.

"In between contractions, I slid her down the road, and we didn't even make it to the car, which might have been a good thing,” Bonanni said. “Better to deliver there than the highway, you know."

Neighbors assisted and a 911 dispatcher gave instructions as the couple’s 7 lb. 9 oz. daughter was born on the side of the road.

“I was on the phone with 911, talking him through it. And he certainly delivered his own baby -- right there on the side of the road,” neighbor George Leader said.

Bonanni was able to take his daughter back to the house to keep warm while Leader and a roommate pulled his wife, still on the sled, back to the house.

EMTs eventually made it up the hill to their house and took little Bella Sophia and her parents to the hospital.

Mom and the baby are doing fine and are expected to go home in a few days.
