CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A million dollar mansion once owned by former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield will be burned to the ground this weekend.

According to WSOC, Mayfield was evicted from the property last year after financial troubles stemming from a failed drug test in 2009 that banned him from racing.

The house was one time reportedly valued at $1.8 million.

But the 12,000-square-foot house isn’t worth that anymore and by Saturday afternoon, much of it will be gone.

Everything in the seven-bedroom, seven-bath house is stripped down from the windows to the wiring.

Neighbors said Mayfield tried to renovate the home, but when he was banned from racing and arrested for possession of meth and stolen property work on the home came to an abrupt halt.

Catawba Fire Chief Donald Robinson says the new owners no longer want the home that is worth just over $300,000 dollars.

Burning it will take it off the tax books while providing training for firefighters in the county.

Mayfield is scheduled to go back before a judge early next month where he faces several felony charges.

No its a demonstration of how the drug war ruins lives. Criminalizing actions that harm no one but oneself is immoral. Its the INJUSTICE SYSTEM that ruined Mayfields life, not the drugs. You have a brain, use it.

While I agree with you regarding criminalizing drug use being wrong, the “War on Drugs” didn’t ruin Mayfield’s life, his choices did. He chose a profession (NASCAR) that has rules against drug use, and he broke them, earning himself a suspension from that employment. Does that mean he couldn’t do other jobs? No, of course not, but he probably wan’t going to get one earning as much, but again, his fault for his poor choices.

And in his case, the risk of harm to others, not just himself, if he were under the influence of drugs while racing more than makes it justified to prohibit drug use in his chosen profession…it is moral to do for the safety of others.

Maybe you should thing of the given situation before you speak. And his stolen property charge does cause “harm” to someone else, so it wasn’t just the drugs that got him in trouble…though he probably started stealing to feed his drug habit.

Yeah, im confused on that too. So if you ask the fire department to burn it for you, it’s not considered arson? But if you do it yourself it is?? Removing the house will just make the property more valuable so there will be personal property taxes in that respect. I don’t get it.

I can’t comment on the tax issue but in Maryland the fire department can burn it if it is legitimate training and it’s uninsured. The reason it is illegal to burn it yourself is related to the EPA and insurance fraud issues.

You have a right to destroy your own property. It becomes arson when some other criminal act is attached to that destruction. For example, insurance fraud.

MattyK you are an idiot. Saying drugs only ruin the persons life. How about everyone around them. I bet after you writing your post you had to get back to making another batch of Meth.

Yep you can burn down your own house, that’s what we did to my grandfathers old place to make room for the new residence. All we had to do was get a permit since it was inside city limits by about 20 feet.

What a waste! There is no reason that house could not have been fixed up and resold! That house could not have gotten into such bad shape in such a short time. Houses have sat for decades that are restored. Absurd that such a house just goes to waste! No wonder other countries hate us!
