WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — On Saturday, the CIAA board of directors declared Virginia State University ineligible to participate in the 2013 football postseason.

Virginia State University backup running back Lamont Darnell Britt, 22, of Portsmouth, Va., is charged with assault and inflicting serious injury in an attack on Winston-Salem State quarterback Rudy Johnson on Friday.

The assault happened in the bathroom at an awards luncheon in the Anderson Center on the Winston-Salem State campus.

The incident led to the cancellation of the CIAA football championship game scheduled for Saturday between Winston-Salem State and Virginia State.

On Saturday, the CIAA released this statement:

“Based upon available information, and in the best interest of the conference and its member-institutions, the CIAA board of directors declared Virginia State University ineligible to participate in the 2013 football postseason. Yesterday, concurrent with the CIAA Football Championship luncheon, an incident occurred that involved student-athletes from Virginia State University and Winston-Salem State University. After consulting with the appropriate stakeholders, the CIAA cancelled today’s Football conference championship. The Championship will not be rescheduled.”
