NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Wal-Mart’s Black Friday deal bonanza starts earlier than ever this year, at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

The sales kick off two hours earlier than they did last year, mirroring similar announcements from a number of its competitors.

Wal-Mart is slashing prices again this year on popular items like tablets, TVs, home appliances and toys. The deep discounts will be offered at specific times on Thursday and Friday.

The store promises to stock 65% more TVs and double the number of tablets compared to last year, according to Duncan MacNaughton, Wal-Mart’s chief merchandising officer.

The evening will be broken into phases, during which select items will be guaranteed at a certain price point for an hour to customers who are in line at the time. A total of 21 items have made the deep discounts list this year, compared to just three last year.

Phase 1: At 6 pm. on Thanksgiving, 10 items will be made available on special sale. Buy an Apple 16 GB Wi-Fi enabled iPad mini, which sells for $299, and get a Wal-Mart $100 gift card along with it.

A 60-inch Vizio flat panel TV will sell for $688, a $310 savings, and a Funai 32-inch HD TV for $98.

HP Pavillion TouchSmart laptops will be $278, more than $300 below the regular price.

The popular video game Call of Duty Ghosts will be $39.96, a $20 savings, and a Furby Boom for $29, $30 off full price.

Phase 2: At 8 p.m., three items will be discounted: Beats by Dr. Dre headphones for $114.95 ($85 off), a Galaxy Centura prepaid phone for $29 ($70 off) and a 7-inch RCA tablet for $49 ($50 off).

Phase 3: At 8 a.m. on Black Friday, people will get a $75 Wal-Mart gift card if they buy the Apple iPhone 5C or 5S with two year contracts with AT&T or Verizon. The phones will be sold at their regular Wal-Mart prices.

A $20 Wal-Mart gift card will be given with a $169 Keurig brewing system, and $10 gift card with a $79 SodaStream kit.

Customers will also get up to $127 off for each tire.

Online deals: Starting on Thanksgiving morning, certain online-only deals will also be offered, including $75 off an iPad 2. A Samsung 40-inch HD TV will be $379, a discount of $50.

Managers specials: Local managers will drop prices on certain categories and brands that are in demand for the holidays. Customers have to check their local Wal-Mart Facebook pages on Thanksgiving for details. These specials will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Black Friday.

Customers don’t have to wait in line if they arrive early. They will be given wrist bands once they arrive, so that they can browse around the rest of the store until the sale starts. Once it’s time for their phase to begin, they have to head back to the lines.

What it means for workers: About 1 million Wal-Mart workers will be scheduled to work over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Wal-Mart said that workers will get “a nice Thanksgiving dinner at work,” as well as extra “holiday pay.”

Workers scheduled to work will also get a 25% discount off one purchase, regardless of how many items they buy at the time.

Wal-Mart’s decision to offer these incentives comes after employees staged protests last year on Black Friday, demanding higher wages, better benefits and hours and the right to speak up without fear of retaliation.

The movement has since caught steam, and protests have continued to pop up throughout the country even in other low-paid jobs. Just last week, five Wal-Mart workers were arrested outside of a Los Angeles store while protesting.

Wal-Mart isn’t the only store opening earlier this year. Kmart leads the pack, opening at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving day and staying open for 41 hours straight, leading shoppers to go on the store’s Facebook page to express distaste. Some called the decision “heartless,” “greedy,” “shameful” and “disgusting.”

Toys R Us is opening at 5 p.m., three hours earlier than last year. Macy’s, Kohl’s, J.C. Penney and Sears will let customers in at 8 p.m.

Greed will be the downfall of this once great country. Corporations have flexed their muscle in this country for far too long now. They have become heartless, greedy, shameless and disgusting… just like the article states. They have become shameless in their exploitation of this economy and the people out there who are desperate to make a living to feed their families. Wages are low, hours are long, benefits are shoddy (if they exist at all) and now they’re taking holidays away. What will they take away from employees next? Christmas Day?

    Truly disgusting!

    • Yvonne

It truly is disgusting. What’s even more disgusting are the folks who’ll be forfeiting time with their families to get in line early for the “deals.”

Any reason to complain right? these employees are not being held at gunpoint to work at walmart. I work Thanksgiving to but because I choose to because its extra $ for Christmas gifts. Some of you people must be to bored to find reasons to hate everything.

I work at walmart in san Antonio and I have to work Thursday and Friday and there is no extra holiday pay !! Oh yeah and we are having Pizza for Thanksgiving Dinner …

    • Dale C

There was a time when companies were moral enough (or required by law, depending on location) to pay someone “holiday pay” or, in most instances, double time for a significant holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Gone are the corporate morals of yesteryear. Only the citizens of America can take away their ability to get away with it.

I have worked for Walmart the past almost 6 yrs. I can honestly say at some point most retailers will overlook Thanksgiving. Since being employed there we have closed later on Christmas Eve as well. I think if you don’t have your gift by 6 pm too bad. You’ve had all year to shop. As for holiday pay yes you DO get it. You must either be lieing or listening to the wrong people. You get holiday pay for all holidays except Easter.

One of the reasons I left Wal-mart after 13 years is because of not being with my family on holidays. You, know it is only a matter of time before they are open on Christmas.

What happen to Thanksgiving? Be off from work spending time with family. America we are letting go of the tradition the value BEING WITH FAMILY. Stores opening earlier & earlier will mount to NOTHING. so why call it Black Friday!

All Hell Breaks Loose!!!! I Hate Black Friday, Hated with a Passion. People act too crazy at them sales yelling and fighting I don’t have time for that foolishness. Sorry!!!

So you miss Thanksgiving dinner big deal. If that is the only day you can make your family feel special and loved I feel sorry for them. I bet you would give up Thanksgiving dinner and family time for a football game or a baseball game, you have 24 hours in a day and I am sure you can fit in time to spend with family and friend’s. I’m not saying family time isn’t important, because it is. I have four children and black Friday makes it possible for my husband and I to give them a better Christmas. We spend our time together then with family having Christmas dinner then watching those faces light up when they can open up more then one gift because prices are so much cheaper on black Friday. We are not rich and every penny we can save helps a lot. So thank God for black Friday and thank God for family!!!!!!!

Thank you!! That was very well said! Finally someone with some common sense and not afraid to speak up to the whiny cry babies out there who just want to have something to boycott. People in this country aren’t happy unless they are bitching about something. No one is forcing these people to work at these places. I work Every Thanksgiving, new years and Christmas eve to because it pays well to work holidays in this country. Do what you have to do to take care of your family. Besides We do NOT celebrate thanksgiving the way its intended to be celebrated anyway. People complain about having to work to help other families who other wise couldn’t afford Christmas(they don’t see it that way) by holding black Friday because they’d rather get fatter by stuffing their faces and watching football???

  • l

I challange the public this year to wait and shop true Black Friday! The reason why these stores are opening earlier is because they are responding to a greedy public !!!!!! I to work retail, but because I have seniority; I will be working Friday !.!.!.

  • Willow

I don’t know what your saying about thanks giving and not spending it with your family because Black Friday is the day after

  • Latrese Jones

Thanksgiving is a time to spend with your family at home eating and catching up. After stuffing your mouth and digesting your food its time to get ready for black friday not black thurday. The corporate people are losing site of what the holiday is about. Money is the root of all evil this is a perfect example…nothing good is going to come out of this next they’ll take Christmas from the children because the kids are going to be sitting around the table wondering where their parents and family are…..Just Sad
