HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) -- Two people were killed in an early morning house fire, according to Henrico firefighters.

Officials said 53-year-old James Wallace and a woman whose identity has not yet been released died in the blaze.

Fire crews were called to the home at 2804 Ginter St., near Dumbarton Rd., about 5 a.m.

"The fire was reported by a neighbor across the street, which could see flames in the front window of the two story, brick, single family home," Henrico Fire Capt. James Mellon wrote in a news release. "When fire units arrived six minutes later they found heavy fire conditions from the front of the home."

When neighbors said there were likely people inside the home, firefighters attempted a rescue.

"We did actually rescue one and bring them out, but we realized after he was outside that it was not a viable person at that point," Capt. Mellon said.

By daybreak, the flames and hot spots were extinguished and the dozens of firefighters, paramedics and police moved out. Investigators are still working to uncover what sparked the fatal fire.

"I feel for the people, the families and everything that something like this happened," Robert Bowen said. "It's such a tragedy."

One firefighter was also taken to VCU Medical Center for minor burns to his cheek and ear.
