RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Today is national POW/MIA Recognition Day.  Thousands of people across the country will remember those who fought for our country and were either prisoners of war or missing in action.

The day is also focused on remembering the families of those servicemen and women, who have also had to sacrifice.

Here in Richmond at The Virginia War Memorial, several special events are scheduled.

The events are set to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.  As part of the recognition day Phyllis Galanti is set to speak to a group of middle school students.

Galanti, nicknamed "fearless Phyllis" is known for her persistence in helping her husband Paul Galanti--a former Navy pilot--make it home safely.

There is another scheduled event on Saturday at 10:00 a.m also at the Virginia War Memorial.
