Chesterfield teacher named ‘Teacher of the Year’ finalist

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A Chesterfield County teacher is among the finalists for the 2014 Virginia Teacher of the Year.

Tracey Zaval, an eighth-grade civics and economics teacher at Midlothian Middle, will learn if she is the winner next month.

Other finalists include:

  • Carrie Gantt, English teacher at Princess Anne High in Virginia Beach
  • Tara Hefner, second-grade teacher at Courtland Elementary in Spotsylvania
  • Melissa Porfirio, first-grade teacher at Crestwood Elementary in Fairfax
  • Jennifer Lovett, reading specialist at Linkhorne Elementary in Lynchburg
  • Byard “Trey” Harris III, music teacher at Bassett High in Henry County
  • Tina Cook, computer technology teacher at Chilhowie Middle in Smyth County
  • Shawnta Posey-James, Earth science teacher at Greensville High in Greensville County

“These teachers, from schools in every corner of the Commonwealth, are committed to excellence and the success of their students,” Governor Bob McDonnell said in a statement. “I congratulate them for their selection as regional teachers of the year and thank them for what they do every day to prepare young Virginians for the future.”
