KING WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A 14-hour standoff in King William County ended early Monday morning, according to the King William County Sheriff’s Office.

The standoff began Sunday evening around 5:30 p.m. when a man barricaded himself inside his home. King William County Sheriff Jeff Walton said this started when deputies went to conduct a mental check on a 49-year-old man who lives in the 1000 block of Mill Road.

“Several attempts were made to make contact with the barricaded male subject who refused to surrender or to make contact with police personnel on-scene,” Virginia State Police spokesman Thomas Molnar wrote in an email. “After hearing a gunshot from inside the residence, attempts were once again made to make further contact with the male.  The tactical team was able to gain entry into the residence where they located the male suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

The man was flown to VCU Medical Center with serious non-life threatening injuries, police said. State Police said its investigation in on-going.

Earlier in the standoff a neighbor said law enforcement came to his door around 8 p.m. and told him to cut off all his outdoor and indoor lights. Additionally, deputies advised him to keep to the back portion of his home.

As of 11 p.m., the neighbor said he could hear authorities trying to coax the man out with a megaphone.
