RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - A spokesman for Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli says Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell is the one who hired his personal attorney after Cuccinelli recused himself from the case involving the executive mansion chef charged with embezzlement.

Not Cuccinelli, as the governor said just last week.

In a statement Cuccinelli spokesman Brian Gottstein says:

"The governor has authorized us to correct the record that he was the one who selected tony troy for his outside counsel for matters arising from and related to the Todd Schneider case.

We could not correct the record until we were released from the confidentiality of the attorney-client privilege."

Because Cuccinelli recused himself taxpayers are now picking up attorney Tony Troy’s $140,000 tab for 11 weeks of work.

A spokesman for the governor says he would comment on Tuesday.
