VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WKMG) – An 11-year-old girl is recovering after a shark attacked her. It happened Sunday while the child was swimming in Daytona, Florida.
“It bit me with its mouth here at the same time, and sliced me again and then came at me again,” sixth grader Riley Breihan said pointing to her wounds.
Breihan said she was boogy-boarding when she was attacked. She said when she stood up in the knee-deep water, she felt something attach to her leg.
"At first I wasn't thinking about pain, I was thinking I got bit by a shark, I got to go to the emergency room," she recalled. "Then I felt the stinging and throbbing and it hurt real bad."
A couple of nearby swimmers jumped in to help the child.
"They wrapped me up in their towel, they carried me and put me in the back of their jeep," she said.
At the hospital, doctors said Breihan had been bitten twice. Once in the lower leg and once in the heel.
Doctors also found a baby shark tooth stuck in Breihan's skin.
"They had to numb me and they had to prick it out," she said. "I don't think i would go back in the water just because I'm going to wait."
