PETERSBURG, Va. (WTVR) – Firefighters are taking part in an annual water rescue class after three Virginia State University students and several other swimmers drowned.

The Petersburg Fire Department, along with a water rescue team, is hosting the course at Battersea Beach.

Fire crews are being introduced to the proper gear, what it is like to get in the water with equipment, body positioning and rescue techniques for land and water.

The course continues Thursday on the western side of Campbell’s Bridge.
