UPDATE: Babysitter charged in 17-month-old’s murder indicted
STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - A Virginia man is charged with murder after a child he was babysitting died. Forty-year-old Duc Chau turned himself in to Stafford County Sheriff’s Deputies this week.
He is charged with First Degree Murder, Aggravated Malicious Wounding and two counts of Child Abuse.
Rescue crews were called to a home on Providence Street in Stafford on July 13 after a child was injured.
Sabrina Green lives in the same building with Chau says "I'm just really surprised and shocked because I see him all the time, I didn't really know him. I know he didn't speak English, I just spoke to him yesterday and this is just really surprising."
Duc Chau, who lives on Providence Street, told investigators the 17-month-old boy fell on the tile floor while running to get a bottle of milk, according to Stafford County Sheriff’s Deputies.
The child died two days later at VCU Medical Center in Richmond.
Based on the extent of the child's injuries, investigators presented their evidence to a special grand jury. That grand jury indicted Duc Chau on Friday.
Paige Sierra, who lives in the next building down from Chau says "He was really quiet, I don't think he spoke much English because he wouldn't say anything when you talked to him but he just stared at people, smoked his cigarettes."
Duc Chau is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail with no bond.
