HAMPTON, Va. (WTKR) – Police say a mistake by one driver is to blame for a fire at a gas station in Hampton.

Hampton Police Division Cpl. Mary Shackelford says the driver was pulling up to the pump when her foot got stuck under the pedal, causing her to hit another car and the gas pump, causing it to burst into flames.

Witnesses say the fire was so intense they could feel the heat from across the street. Others say they were worried the gas pumps could explode.

A good Samaritan ran up to both burning cars and pulled the drivers to safety. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police haven't said whether they'll charge the driver responsible.
