(WTVR) - The Food and Drug Administration is taking a look at a new caffeinated chewing gum.

The FDA is worried about the potential impact the gum could have on children.

Wrigley launched its new "Alert Energy" gum Monday. It contains 40 milligrams of caffeine per piece, that's as much as half of a cup of coffee.

An FDA spokesperson said one serving of caffeinated foods isn't likely to hurt anyone, but the concern is that it will become too easy for adults and kids to consume large amounts of caffeine throughout the day.

Wrigley said the gum is aimed only at adults looking for an energy boost and that it's not recommended for children or anyone who is sensitive to caffeine.
