RICHMOND, Va  (WTVR)  -  Despite a motion to reduce the charges against 37-year old Darryl L. Jefferson, he’ll spend a jury recommended 46 years in prison.

Jefferson was sentenced in a Richmond courtroom this morning in the first degree murders of brothers Ahkeem Phillips, 28, and Ahmad Phillips, 24.

Jefferson joined a fight between 21-year old Randy Trent and the brothers at the Tobacco Factory apartments in the 700 block of Stockton Street in South Richmond on April 18, 2012.The fight was over Trent not picking up the waste his dog left behind.  A fist fight ended with gunfire, and the Phillips brothers lying on the ground with wounds to their legs.

Prosecutors say while Trent walked away, Jefferson approached the brothers lying on the ground, and fired his weapon multiple times into both of them.

Ahkeem died on the scene, Ahmad died the next morning at VCU Medical Center.

After his arrest, Trent pleaded guilty to two counts of second degree murder.  He was sentenced to 30 years in prison with 15 years suspended.

The Phillips brothers’ mother, Rosalyn was in the courtroom for the sentencing.  She says she’s satisfied with the sentence handed to both Jefferson and Trent.

“God’s got the last word and they will have to answer,” she said. “This is behind something as senseless as dog feces.  They (Jefferson and Trent) are animals and they deserve to spend time in prison."

While Jefferson’s defense attorney plans to file an appeal, Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Learned Barry says he believes the feds are also going to file drug and firearms charges against Jefferson.
