CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - A Chesterfield high school student was arrested and charged with bringing a gun to school. Patrick Hailey, 18, is officially charged with one count of Possessing a Firearm on School Property and one count of Possessing a Weapon on School Property.
Hailey was arrested on Friday at Cosby High School. Hailey's vehicle was searched after someone saw tobacco products in the vehicle, according to Chesterfield Police.
During the search an inoperable gun and four knives were found. Two of the knives were folding knives and not in violation of the law, police said.
The gun was missing a piece, making it inoperable, police said.
"We sincerely appreciate our partnership with Chesterfield Police and their efforts to enforce the law," Chesterfield Schools Spokesman Shawn Smith said in a statement. "We are working with parents and students to make sure they check their vehicles prior to coming to school so that they are fully aware of what they might be bringing to school (and that they don’t inadvertently bring something that was in their possession for another reason)."
