CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WTVR) - Will Virginia's next governor support the legalization of marijuana?

Virginia Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli told a group of University of Virginia students that he was open to the idea.

When asked his opinion on states like Colorado and Washington legalizing the drug, the attorney general said he did not have a problem with states experimenting with marijuana laws.

The answer surprised UVa. Center for Politics director Larry Sabato.

"He went much further than I thought he would go and clearly expressed a willingness to consider legalization at some point," Sabato said. "I thought he would focus on medical marijuana, but he was talking about the possibility of legalization for at least possession and use of a  small amount of marijuana"

Later this year, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe is expected to speak at the same class.
