HENRICO COUNTY, Va (WTVR)- Friday, at Deep Run Recreation Center, there was a grand retirement party for Henrico’s manager Virgil Hazelett, who ran a county with 10,000 employees and a billion dollar plus annual budget with what many believed was grace, insight and great competency.

He started as a traffic engineer 40 years ago and worked his way up through the ranks to get the top job 21 years ago.

He was both arguably the most powerful single official in Richmond as well as the most gentle – the area’s Mr. Rogers. He set the tone.

His wife of 34 years says that spirit of teamwork came from his heart.

As Hazelett said in his retirement speech, what many consider to be government, he considered home.

CBS 6 interviewed Virgil Hazelett and his wife, Shardale, about his tenure and their future plans as his retirement party built up steam.
