(WTVR) – The National Crime Victimization Survey was released by the Department of Justice Wednesday afternoon.

The report shows violent crimes are up for the first time in nearly two decades.

Violent crimes rose 18 percent across the country, and property crimes are up 11 percent.

The report notes in the past few years the number of crimes were historically low, which may explain the increase.
