RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - The VCU Police Department sent a text alert at 10:51 p.m., with the message that there was a stabbing near the VCU Medical Center.

The message said that a stabbing occurred during a fight at the intersection of N. 9th Street and E. Marshall Street.

A follow-up email from VCU Police stated that around 10:30 p.m., a female victim was walking when she was approached by the two female suspects.

"It was a little alarming but I had to keep it in check that this is Richmond and things do happen," VCU Freshman Alyssa Squitieri said.

Police said that the suspects began assaulting the victim and as a result the victim suffered stab wounds. Richmond Police are now investigating the case and do not believe this was a random act of violence.  The suspects were last seen running towards Broad Street.

"It's sort of unnerving," VCU Senior Rashadd Brown said.  "Not that condone it but you kind of get used to it."

Police described the first suspect as 5'2", around 125 lbs., wearing a white t-shirt and hair in braids. The second suspect is 5'3" around 180 lbs. and she was wearing all black clothing. One or both suspects had a knife police said.

"What's going to happen when I walk home?" Brown asked.  "It's so much to think about that something has to get forced out and I hope it's not school."
