RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) -- It wasn't the first day of school today, but there was just as much excitement as students were waking up to an international initiative made its way right here to Central Virginia.  Today was international "Walk To School Day," and that is exactly what hundreds of students across the Metro did.

Parents and students were both ditching their normal mode of transportation, instead opting to pound the pavement.

"Get them going, get them ready so when they get to school they are already excited; their minds are ready," said Holton Elementary parent Jennifer Pope.

Parents were also taking the time to teach a valuable lesson, outside the classroom.

"I always tell my kids if you step out look both ways and still take your time," said Pope.  Because I've seen over in my neighborhood people speed through the stop sign, speed through the yield sign."

The lesson on how to cross the road safely is not unfamiliar to students at the Patrick Henry Charter School, who are without a crossing guard.

Parents are hoping drivers will also become more aware of road safety.

"The drivers out there will pay attention to those signs, the sign, it's there for a reason."

Another goal from todays movement was centered around promoting healthier habits.

"We know that kids who get regular exercise do better in school, they learn better and their grades are better so demonstrating that people can get out and walk--I think people will think about it," said Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources Dr. Bill Hazel.
