HIGHLAND SPRINGS, Va. (WTVR) - Highland Springs head coach Loren Johnson changed his mind with 3 seconds left in the Springers game with Hanover, and it ended up leading them to a 24-21 win over the Hawks.
The Springers, trailing by 3 drove down inside the Hanover 10 yard line, then spiked the ball to stop the clock with :03 left. Highland Springs brought out their field goal unit and Hanover called time out. During that timeout, Johnson had a change of heart, and quarterback D.J. Johnson made it pay off with an 8 yard TD run on the last play of the game.
Hanover built a 21-6 lead on the strength of 3 touchdowns from Donte Haynesworth, 2 on offense and one on defense. The Hawks were playing without two-way threat Sam Rogers who dislocated a finger earlier in the week in practice and will miss the next couple of games.
But the Springers scored 18 unanswered 4th quarter points and had two touchdown runs from Daryl Wilson.
Highland Springs improves to 4-0 on the year while the Hawks fall to 3-1.
