RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Despite the rain, GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney made an appearance at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday.

He spent time greeting fans under a tent in the infield, handing out hotdogs, shaking hands and posing for photos.

"I'm super excited to meet Mitt Romney.  It's pretty great to know that he's out here speaking to fans and real people--blue collar people--like us.  I think it's great he's doing that, and I hope he can carry Virginia," said NASCAR fan Greg Atkins .

Romney was scheduled to help with the start of tonight's NASCAR race, but he canceled due to rain.

Instead, he met with the president and vice president of NASCAR thanking them for welcoming him and his staff to RIR.

He left Richmond around 8 p.m.
