PETERSBURG, Va. (WTVR) – A couple was walking their dog along the Appomattox River, where they spotted a human skull.

Police say around 11 a.m., the couple discovered the skull in a mud bed.

It is believed to be a historical find, possibly dating from the Civil War or from an earlier period.

A detective from the Petersburg Police Department went to retrieve the skull, and it will be going to a medical examiner on Monday.
