RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Shockoe Bottom has gone to the birds! Each summer over 20,000 Purple Martins swoop down into Bradford pears by the 17th St farmers market to roost. Dozens of onlookers were on hand Saturday night to see the birds roost.

Purple Martins are the largest member of the swallow family in North America, and experts say they are very social birds.
