PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – Police in Prince William County are working to determine how a 4-year-old boy was able to get a loaded gun and shot himself to death.

It happened Wednesday inside a pickup truck parked in front of the boy’s home while family members were home.

However, neighbors said they did not realize the child was inside the truck until they heard the gunshot.

“It’s still under an active investigation. Once we determine whether or not there was negligence here, there are the potential for charges,” said Prince William County Police’s Jonathan Perok on Wednesday.

Police have not released the name of the child or said whom the gun belongs to.
