Sunday storm reports

While some areas went completely rain and storm-free Sunday, some select locations were pounded with more severe weather.

Storms formed in the hot & humid air mass ahead of an approaching cold front.  Strong storms began developing around 2 p.m., and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued from mid-afternoon through late evening.

Particularly hard-hit was Spotsylvania county near Fredericksburg.  A severe thunderstorm which produced a microburst (a concentrated band of strong winds that gushes down from a thunderstorm, hits the ground, and then moves parallel with the ground) caused winds in excess of 70 mph three miles south of Fredericksburg.  Structural damage occurred in two buildings on Fleming Street, near Jeff Davis Highway.

Also hit with wind damage and large hail were Augusta, Albemarle, Caroline, Greene, King George, Middlesex, Rockingham, Stafford, Westmoreland & York counties.

In addition to high wind and large hail reports, some counties also saw repeated heavy rainfall, prompting localized flood advisories.
