RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) – A change in the schedule for 95 bridge work could slow down your weekend commute. On Sunday July 1st crews will work on 95 North and South in each direction between the Lombardy Street bridge (mile marker 77) and Laburnum Avenue (mile marker 79) as crews replace two sections of the I-95 southbound bridge over Hermitage Road (mile marker 78). This work begins at 6pm Sunday and goes through 6 a.m. Monday.

I-95 south traffic will merge onto the northbound bridge. Both I-95 north and south traffic will use the northbound bridge to maneuver around the construction. From 6 p.m.-6 a.m., I-95 south drivers will be restricted from exiting at Boulevard and the ramp from Boulevard to I-95 north will be closed. Also, Hermitage Road will be closed under the bridge during the replacement. Follow posted detour routes. Expect major delays along I-95. Use I-295, Route 288 and the Downtown Expressway (toll)/I-195 to bypass the construction.

* The 6 p.m.-6 a.m. lane closure is a change from the normal 8 p.m.-6 a.m. lane closure. Closing earlier will allow the contractor to place two bridge sections instead of one. Installing two sections will prevent the need for temporary steel grids to span the old and new bridge sections. Temporary spans are not typically used over multiple days, thus the need to place both permanent bridge sections prior to the holiday week.
