WEATHER: Severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m.
RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is active for all of central, southern, and eastern Virginia until 8 p.m. A strong cold front is approaching the Commonwealth from the northwest today, and will trigger scattered strong to severe thunderstorms in central Virginia from this afternoon into early this evening. Primary threats with our strongest storms include damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph and frequent lightning, along with some severe hail (about quarter-size hail), as well as a slim chance for an isolated tornado (mainly east of I-95). Our primary concern with any other storms that develop will be the straight-line wind damage potential, along with local heavy downpours and frequent lightning. The front will clear southeast Virginia this evening a few hours after sunset, scouring out our humid air-mass and ending our storm threat from northwest to southeast.
