Florida Swallowtail Almost Extinct

(CNN) – This beautiful butterfly is so rare — it’s now considered an endangered species.
It’s called a Schaus swallowtail butterfly, and it’s found only in south Florida.
This month, the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service gave an emergency authorization to catch live swallowtails so their eggs can be collected and raised.

In a survey last year, just 41 of the once-common butterflies were sighted.
Scientists say habitat destruction, drought, hurricanes and pesticide use are to blame for nearly wiping out the insects.
