RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Scattered strong to severe storms are expected to develop Friday afternoon and evening.

High pressure remains anchored off the southeastern U.S. coastline, with southwesterly winds causing rich low-level moisture (dew point temperatures into the 60s) and very warm afternoon heating (highs upper 80s/lower 90s).

Although most of these storms will be “pulse-type” thunderstorms (storms that develop and grow rapidly, remain strong for a short period of time, then dissipate quickly), they can produce frequent lightning and gusty winds while they do exist.

The strongest storms will be capable of producing large hail and damaging wind gusts in excess of 58 mph. In some cases, dying thunderstorms like this can produce severe wind gusts as the storm “collapses” and colder air from aloft plummets to the ground.

We call these “microburst” or “downburst” winds, and they usually lead to tree and roof damage. Highlighted in yellow on this severe risk map is the region of the Commonwealth where storms may reach their strongest Friday.
