RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Alex Erby appeared in Richmond court via video conference Friday morning. In court, Erby was officially charged with two felony counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor.
The judge set Erby's bond at $40,000 per charge, for a total of $80,000.
The children who accused Erby said the crimes occurred in February and March of this year.
Erby worked as an instructional assistant at G.H. Reid Elementary School in South Richmond. The judge did not indicate whether the children were Erby's students.
"I was in denial," said friend J.D Lewis. "We're talking about one of the pillars of the community. This is a great guy."
"Teacher, coach, friend, husband, father, I mean everything positive this guy is," he added.
Thursday, school officials released a statement about Erby's arrest saying they do not comment on personnel issues – and that the case is in the hands of the commonwealth’s attorney.
Erby is due back in court May 16.
