RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Richmond Police have identified the man discovered shot in the chest near the intersection of Semmes and Cowardin Ave. in South Richmond Tuesday morning as 46-year-old Freddie Fields .

Police have not yet released details about a suspect or motive in the shooting.  An autopsy is underway to determine the cause and manner of death.

Police were called to the area around 5:15 a.m.  By mid-afternoon, investigators were still combing the neighborhood for clues.

"Our detectives are very experienced with dealing with surveillance video," said Richmond Police Spokesperson Gene Lepley.  "They (detectives) will canvass that area, to number one see if they have eyewitnesses--someone that may have actually saw what happened.  And then check all those stores, all those locations for surveillance video.  We will collect that, we will look at it if we can find it, and maybe that will give us a clue."

The southbound lanes of Cowardin Ave. had been closed during the police investigation.  But the roads have since reopened.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
