REPORT: Virginia Tech hires James Johnson to replace Seth Greenberg

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Citing a source familiar with the situation,  CBS-affiliate WSPA in Greenville, S.C. reported Monday morning that Virginia Tech has hired former assistant coach James Johnson as the Hokies new men’s head basketball coach.

Johnson recently left Virginia Tech to take an assistant coaching job at Clemson. Virginia Tech has made no formal announcement about the hire.

Johnson is from Powhatan County, Virginia and went to Powhatan High School. He played college basketball at Ferrum College, according to his bio in the 2011-2012 Virginia Tech media guide.

Virginia Tech fired Seth Greenberg earlier this month.

Virginia Tech Athletic Director Jim Weaver said the reasons he fired Greenberg were not solely because of the Hokies lack of success on the court. It was more about the attrition in the program: 6 assistant coaches have left the team in the last four years, including all three this year as well as the Director of Basketball Operations.
