RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A cold front will pass through Virginia on Monday, allowing a much cooler, drier air mass to take residence in our region Monday night through Wednesday morning.
Low temperatures by daybreak Tuesday will drop into the low/mid 30s for much of the state with some upper 20s in northwestern Virginia.
These will be the coldest temperatures since March 11, when the low was 30° at Richmond International Airport. The normal low for Tuesday morning is 40°, and the record is 21° set back in 1955.
A freeze watch has been issued for northern and northwestern Virginia where lows will likely drop to 32° or colder, along with a Freeze Warning farther west. A Frost Advisory is in effect for southwest Virginia, but frost will also be possible elsewhere in central Virginia, which is particularly worth noting because of our early growing season. If you have tender vegetation, you may want to protect them overnight!
One factor that could prevent frost from developing in most of central Virginia is wind. Behind the dry cold front, winds will remain a little breezy overnight from the north at 5 to 15 mph.
