RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - It's currently illegal to have a firearm stored in your car while in a city or county owned lot. However, that law is one step closer to being tossed out.

With a 9-6 vote, the Republican-run senate courts of justice committee voted in favor of sending a bill to the full senate that would allow city and county employees to leave their firearms stored inside of their vehicle while at work.

The bill does not address any state owned lots. Schools, mental health facilities and jails would be exempt from this legislation.
