RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Police said they found an unloaded gun on a 12-year-old student at a Richmond middle school Wednesday morning.

Officials said a student at Lucille Brown Middle School told a faculty member around 11:35 a.m. that another student had brought a gun to the school.

Karla Peters, a Richmond Police spokesperson, said officers were called to the school and the sixth grade student handed over the weapon.

The 12-year-old boy was charged with possession of a concealed weapon and is facing disciplinary action, including possible expulsion.

Additionally, officials said they think the student may have found the gun on or near school property.

The student is being held at the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center pending a hearing with school officials.

The school system sent a letter home Wednesday afternoon to parents, as well as an automated phone message, about the incident.
