GOOCHLAND COUNTY, VA (WTVR) - A man has been electrocuted and his mother is recovering in the hospital following a Monday morning car crash in Goochland County.

Fifty-five-year-old Eugenia Walker and her son, 32-year-old Ponji Carter, had been delivering newspapers before the accident.

Shortly after Walker turned onto Miller’s Lane, their car veered off the road and slammed into a power pole.

The pole crashed crashed down on the car and the transformer crushed the roof.

Investigators said they do no know what caused the crash or why Carter, who was in the back seat, decided to get out.

The live power lines on the ground near the car sent 19,000 volts through Carter's body. He died at the scene. [PHOTOS: Man electrocuted after car crash]

Walker, who was also able to get out of the car, was also burned and remains in the hospital.

Firefighters said anytime a car crash involves power lines, the safest place to be is inside the car and wait for emergency personnel to arrive.
