RICHMOND, Va. -- Days after new statewide COVID-19 restrictions went into effect, the Virginia Employment Commission is weighing in on potential implications.
Several people have contacted the CBS 6 Problem Solvers with concerns about whether the VEC is prepared to handle a potential increase in applicants, now that new coronavirus restrictions on businesses are in place.
Starting at midnight on Sunday, restaurants and bars were required to stop selling alcohol by 10 p.m. and shut their doors by midnight. It’s no secret that many restaurants make the most of their income after the sun sets.
CBS 6 reached out Tuesday and a spokesperson said they are not expecting a large amount of additional layoffs because of the governor's order, but they're waiting to see what happens.
The spokesperson says the VEC has increased up staff recently because of other issues over the course of the pandemic.
She added that they will be prepared to help if there's a surge in unemployment claims.
CBS 6 has talked to several restaurant and bar owners who say they're uncertain that they'll be able to support all their staff through the next round of restrictions.
