HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- What started in 2013 as a molecular laboratory specializing in genetic testing has now turned into a full service innovative diagnostic testing lab for COVID-19.
Bill Miller, CEO of GENETWORx said that they started creating COVID-19 tests early into the pandemic.
"As soon as the CDC announced the probes that they wanted us to use. We developed a test. We were able to implement our system almost immediately to produce a test for COVID-19," Miller said.
Miller gave CBS 6 a behind-the-scenes look at what is now 24/7 days a week operation.
Miller said his staff can handle up to 50,000 tests per day with an accuracy rate of 99 percent. Their clients, who mail-in nose swab samples from all over the country, receive their results within 48 hours.
"This is something every medical individual strives for to be able to make a difference. And not only to be able to make a difference but be able to make sure that folks that are anxious get their results. And the quicker we can do it, the better that is," says Miller.
GENETWORx has a staff of about 400 and is looking to double in size so they can double their testing.
Miller said that the lab is so busy working around the clock, they've had to moved half of his employees to a new 20,000 square foot facility.
As coronavirus cases to continue to rise, Miller said his lab will continue to provide a valuable contribution towards the fight against COVID-19.
"We think the demand for test is only going to get bigger and our goal is to ultimately be able to continue our turnaround time and deliver those results in 48 hours to get people back to work, students back to college, and get back to normal,” he says.
