RICHMOND, Va. – The Capsoul Collective is preparing to release a new beer this weekend alongside community partners.
It’s called Cohesion and was created in collaboration with Richmond-based Väsen Brewing Company, fashion brand Chilalay and local artist Marlon Diggs who designed the label on the can.
Cohesion is a hazy Double India Pale Ale using South African hops.
“We decided to name it Cohesion to highlight and celebrate the community that we’ve seen in Richmond over the last several months as it relates to racial injustices,” said Eric Jackson, co-founder of The Capsoul Collective. “Cohesion is our celebratory beer to show how the community has been brought together. We believe that beer brings people together as well.”
Connecting people is a main mission of Capsoul, which was founded in 2019. Jackson and co-founder Ty Murdaugh – who’s also the founder of Nerd Black Podcast Network – use the platform to energize and diversify taprooms.
“When Black people go to breweries, we don’t always see people who look like us in the taprooms,” said Jackson. “So, we try to merge that gap.”
Jackson and Murdaugh do that through hosting special events, producing a craft beer podcast and a quarterly magazine – giving others a platform for their passion.
“Some people don’t have a voice within the beer community,” said Murdaugh. “And I think it’s our job, or our privilege actually, to make it so they have that voice and they have that opportunity to speak on something because there are a lot of dope brewers in Richmond.”
Cohesion will be released with three days of special events:
