A chilly start to autumn

RICHMOND, Va. -- On Saturday, the high temperature at Richmond International Airport only hit 65°, which tied the "coolest high" record from 1929.

Temperatures will stay below normal for a few more days.

Lows Monday morning will drop into the 40s away from the coast. Some 30s will occur in our coldest outlying areas.

After highs 65-70° on Monday, lows Tuesday morning will be in the low/mid 40s across central Virginia. Our coldest outlying areas will dip into the mid and upper 30s. It will be around freezing near Interstate 81.

For many locations, this will be the coldest weather since early to mid-May.

The autumnal equinox, the astronomical start to Fall, occurs Tuesday morning. After a chilly morning, it will be a sunny day with highs in the lower 70s.

Highs will get back to around 80° for mid and late week. Overnight lows will increase into the 50s to around 60°.
