HOPEWELL, Va. -- The family of a father of two killed outside a Hopewell nightclub wants to know who shot their loved one and why. Karlos McKinnie, 23, was killed on December 3, 2016, outside Destiny's nightclub.

"You would have never thought the way he was smiling and enjoying himself that it was going to be his last day," Karlos' mother Critia McKinnie said. "I had just left him and he told me he loved me and everything."

McKinnie was a father of two.

"He left behind two twin children, a boy and a girl," Hopewell Police spokesperson Lt. Jacquita Allen said. "They're now six years old and they need answers. We want answers as well."

Police said McKinnie left the club and was dancing in the parking lot when someone shot and killed him.

The shooter drove off in a blue sedan.

"They took my heart. They took a piece of me. They took my grandkids' father, they took a brother," Critia McKinnie said.

McKinnie said she hoped someone would see this story and call in a tip to help investigators solve the case.

"They don't have to come forth, publicly. They can be anonymous with a phone call," she said.
