NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. -- A former Cumberland Hospital Behavior Tech behind bars accused of intentionally burning a disabled patient, had her first court appearance Monday. Stacey Burrell, 57, appeared via video in the New Kent County Circuit Courthouse and was granted a $2,500 secured bond.
The King William woman was charged with felony malicious wounding after she was indicted by a Multi-Jurisdictional Grand Jury.
The Virginia Attorney General's Office is prosecuting the case that is part of an ongoing Virginia State Police investigation into Cumberland Hospital.
In court on Monday, Burrell's attorney described how Burrell was accused of a “scalding incident” while working at the Cumberland Hospital in September 2019.
Shannon Haddon said Burrell intentionally poured hot water on her son Jackson.
Jackson suffers from a traumatic brain injury.
Burrell’s attorney told the court she was not a flight risk because she and her husband were lifelong residents of Central Virginia.
He said her husband was a career employee of Dominion Energy and she was working as a substitute teacher.
Burrell has a status hearing on September 20.
