For the second year in a row, WTVR CBS 6 News was named Outstanding News Operation of the Virginias at the 2023 Associated Press Broadcasters Awards Saturday at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
"WTVR stood out in the way they advanced important stories in their breaking news coverage, their work in using videos and natural sound to add context to all their stories, and their investigative storytelling," the judges wrote. "Of particular note--their innovative coverage of crime in greater Richmond with their 360 degree look at 6pm; and their unique and engaging weather content storytelling. Watching WTVR's submission showcased consistent excellence and captured the spirt of 'who they are' as a news organization."
In addition to being named Outstanding News Operation, WTVR CBS 6 was honored with 13 first or second-place award in 11 other categories:

Thirty-nine news organizations in Virginia and West Virginia submitted 709 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories from 2022.
The VAPB is an independent association comprised of local members of The Associated Press, a not-for-profit news cooperative that represents thousands of newspapers and broadcast stations across the United States.
The VAPB also awarded two $2,000 scholarships to students majoring in media and broadcast journalism: Tolulope Olasoji of West Virginia University and Avalon Pernell of Washington and Lee University.

Evan Jones was honored with The Associated Press Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award for a broadcast career that spans more than 50 years, most recently with WFIR Radio in Roanoke.
The West Virginia Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Tim Irr, anchor at WSAZ-TV. Irr, a native of Pittsburgh, began at the Huntington-Charleston, W.Va., station in 1994.
